The first BytePoker event was a success. We have raised over £2000 for Action for Children.

The winner of tournament was Kelly Maxwell who took the top prize of £500 and generously donated most of it back to the cause. Thanks Kelly and well done!

In second place was Magnus Bergstrom, who wins a free seat in the Party Poker $1million online tournament. Third place was taken by Gwyn Hughes and for that he receives a £300 voucher to spend at www.time2.co.uk. And finally, Jamie Neil took fourth and has the luxury of starting a beginners Shodokan Aikido course, courtesy of the Central London Shodokan Aikido Club.

Photos of the night will be posted here soon...

If you couldn't make it please donate here.

The Tournament: What to expect...

We've had a lot of people say that they are nervous about playing in a live poker tournament. I thought I should talk about what to expect in a tournament and try to put your mind at rest.

Online Registration

This is so that we have a fairly accurate figure of players wishing to take part. All you have to do is give us your name, email address and let us know that you are over 18 (for gambling purposes).

Post Online Registration

We'll email you a few times to see if we can gently persuade you to invite your friends and colleagues to sign-up. There will also be a few reminder emails leading up to the event.

On arrival to the Loose Cannon Club

Once you arrive just come on in. The whole venue is for Byte Poker. You'll be offered a complimentary drink and are free to have a wander around. This venue is very nice (have a look at the 360 video).

Tournament registration

You'll need to register with the tournament director and pay your entrance fee. This involves you giving your name and handing over some cash (remember this is a charity event!). You'll either be given a card or told a table number. This will be the poker table that you will start on. If you do really well you might see a few different tables (we'll join tables together as people get knocked out).

Speeches and various promotional stuff

No charity event would be complete without a speech or two. Several companies will have donated prizes as well so we'll give them a mention and tell you what the final selection of prize are.

Tournament start: Shuffle up and deal!

The tournament director (the chap who's responsibility it is to make sure the event runs smoothly) will ask everyone to take their seats at the correct tables. Unfortunately you can't choose where to sit, it's not fair if you get a bunch of friends all working together against other players. Once everyone has taken their seat the tournament will begin.

We haven't confirmed what the exact blinds or time levels yet as this will be up to the tournament director. As soon as we find out we'll post it here for you.

Venues, Prizes and Financial stuff

Well, we have managed to design and launch the website to promote the Byte Poker 2010 Tournament, now we just need to firm up the other major elements...

Venue

We are talking to the Loose Cannon near Cannon Street and also The Grosvenor Casino London Victoria near Edgeware Road. Both are excellent poker venues and we would be happy to hold the tournament at either location. We do have a couple of standby venues just in case we can't work out a good deal.

The European Poker Tour London is starting in late September so we don't want to clash with that otherwise we won't have many entrants. :)

Prizes

We were looking at how we can have a reasonably good prize pool while still being able to donate a large sum of money to the cause. We are exploring a few variations but at the moment this feels like the right approach:

First place receives £500 cash. Second place through to ninth place will each get an actual prize, decreasing in value (which hopefully will be donated by some wonderful companies). If you would like to donate a prize (and be listed on the site and mentioned on the evening) please contact us.

Financial Stuff

The guys have been thinking long and hard about the buy-in (entrance fee) for the tournament. At the moment we seem to agree that £30 is a good round number. Obviously if you shove all your chips in on the first hand and get busted by a lucky pair of aces (which will probably happen to me) you can then re-buy for another £20. Don't forget this is going to charity.

In fact it's probably a good time to mention that if this tournament is a huge success and we end up taking in a much larger amount, it all goes to charity!
